What makes a house a home? To me, home is love embodied.
Home is care expressed through order, cleanliness, comfort, beauty, and abundance –- so that one can feel relaxed, nourished, and free to be fully oneself.
Creating a wonderful home is a central joy and privilege of adulthood for me. I love being surrounded by my favorite colors, scents, and textures, and by photographs and mementos from the happiest times.
Some of my deep sense of home is the result of time passing. We bought our house sixteen years ago, making it the longest I’ve ever lived in one place. My husband and I have renovated every room in this little house, mostly by ourselves. We’ve raised our darling boy here.
There are layers upon layers of memories in our home, of grief and joy and work and goofiness and arguments and affection and dance parties.
In our home, everywhere I look is beautiful to me. Nothing is fancy or expensive, but every object is useful or beloved or both.
